The birth of a baby, losing a lot of weight, growing into being a woman. These should all be very happy occurrences. But each one can leave stretch marks, and can leave you feeling self conscious about your appearance.
How It Happens
Stretch marks appear on the skin most often the hips, abdomen, and breasts from excessive stretching and the rupture of the skin's tissue, especially during pregnancy, puberty or excessive weight gain and loss.
As the skin, also known as the epidermis, goes through a period of rapid growth, it sometimes causes tearing in the layer of tissue below the surface the dermis. This tearing is in response to a hormone that prevents the formation of collagen and elastin fibers that normally keep the skin taut. Without this supportive material, stretch marks are formed.
Stretch marks first appear as dark or discolored lines, but tend to gradually fade to a lighter color. You'll usually find them on the abdomen (especially near the belly button), breasts, upper arms, underarms, thighs (both inner and outer), hips, and buttocks.
Wives' Tales
You've probably heard plenty of stretch mark prevention tips. A variety of creams and oils, from vitamin E to cocoa butter, have been touted as proven methods for keeping stretch marks at bay. When it comes to prevention, a moisturizer can’t hurt, but should not be looked at as a sure fire way to avoid stretch marks.
You have them. What now?
Though they don't pose a health risk, stretch marks can cause their fair share of self consciousness. There are various products designed to improve the appearance of stretch marks, including lotions and creams, laser treatments, and dermabrasion. Some people even opt for a surgical procedure known as a "tummy tuck" to remove lower abdominal stretch marks.
For those who do not want to resort to surgery or other more costly treatments, Mederma® is a cost-effective way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Whether you're a teenager or have lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time, stretch marks don't have to be a constant source of frustration. Mederma® can help you get back to looking like you.

“After my pregnancy, I was left with horrible stretch marks that covered most of my stomach. I used Mederma®, because I saw the ad and thought I'd give it a try. I was surprised how much it worked. Only little faint lines were left, but nothing compared to before.”Cynthia, IL
