Get your skin ready for summer from head to toe

The good news: the weather is warming up, and we’re slowly shedding the sweaters and scarves we’ve been wearing since fall. The bad news: the effects of rich comfort foods and harsh winter air are starting to catch up with us, so our skin may not look quite ready for summer. Don’t stress out (it’s bad for your skin!) — I have a few tips that will help get your skin ready for a beautiful summer debut!

The dry air and harsh winter winds may be disappearing, but they’ve likely left you with dull skin. Exercise is a great way to give your skin a pick-me-up because it increases blood flow, which keeps cells healthy, allowing them to carry oxygen and nutrients around the body while removing harmful free radicals. The Center for Disease Control recommends that adults ages 18-64 get at least two and a half hours of moderate to intense exercise per week. To make exercising fun, consider a group class that fits into your schedule. Dance classes like Zumba are a great way to get your heart pumping and meet new people as well. Remember: always consult with your healthcare professional before starting any new exercise routine.

How you care for your body on the inside affects how you look on the outside, so now is the time to kick those rich comfort foods and opt for a healthy, balanced diet. Vitamin C can protect the body by reducing damage from free radicals, while vitamin B is crucial to the formation of skin, nail and hair cells. Citrus fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamin C, and vitamin B and can be found in seafood, red meat, cheese and eggs.

For the best skin health possible, there are also foods that should be avoided. Diets high in carbohydrates and simple sugars, as well as salty foods, can cause bloating, leading to tired-looking skin. Avoid this skin issue by sticking to a diet high in whole grains and fiber.

Now is also a good time to start thinking about using a topical product to help reduce the appearance of skin imperfections like scars and stretch marks and give an extra boost to your self-confidence prior to swimsuit season.
